Greetings and thanks for stopping in to get acquainted!

I hope you'll enjoy my novels and poetry.

My novels aren't about animals, but they're about people who love them and learn from them while they're trying to solve human problems. My poetry is for people who don't necessarily love poetry, but seem to feel at home with mine.

My life started when I was about 12 and got my first horse. For well over a half century, I rode, showed, and taught riding with American Saddlebreds and Arabians. My last horse, pictured here, was El Rys'a at age 30, born to my mare Rico's Feyrous. He and his "uncle," Ragas Rahbur, were my dressage horses at a time when Arabians weren't popular in dressage.  For many years, I've also been involved in animal rescue.

I attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, but eventually realized I'd rather be painting with words. So in my working life, I was always a writer of some sort: academic, news and PR, and technical and grant writing.

Everybody has at least one "escape" activity. One of mine was earning a pilot's license, which enabled me to fly to airports with friends and drink coffee. Another is reading mysteries, preferably those with character-driven plots.

I've lived in Illinois, Kansas, and Colorado. I received my Ph.D. in English at Northern Illinois University, taught at NIU and a number of community colleges, and have also been a professional librarian.

My chapbook Inheritance was published in 2008 by Puddin’head Press, Chicago. I have two full-length poetry collections, Let the Thunder In, published in 2014 by Boxing Day Books, Princeton, IL, and Risk, by Kelsay Books, Hemet, CA, in 2017. My novel The Wanderers was published by Black Rose Writing, Castroville, TX, also in 2017. Two sequels, Leaves of the Linden Tree and The Book Fix, were released by the same publisher in 2018 and 2019.

I have poems in many literary magazines.

Prairie Fox Books  in Ottawa continues to be the area's only indie bookstore, and it's a great place to visit. I'll be there with other authors Saturday April 27 from 11 to 3 for their special event celebrating Independent  Bookstore Day.

Come to the Open Table United Church of Christ in Ottawa the third Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. for poetry readings, other genres, sometimes music. Hosted by Dave McClure. Refreshments!
